This is my wandering way into owner training a service dog

Pair of Baby Bottoms….by Lisa Harmon May 1, 2008

Baby bottoms, BB left, Kenai right, 17 weeks old.

You have no idea how long it took me to get this pic up!! WordPress has decided to put the add image window in a place that cuts it in half. So I can upload, I just can’t get to the insert button…had to upload pics to the blogspot I don’t use and transfer it that way.

To err is human but to really screw up, you need a computer…

I should warn you know, I’m feeling chatty, so this is likely to be a long winded post. I loved this shot: big butt, little butt. There’s not going to be pics of the Brothers Grin together for about a month. Our fourpack is going to be a three pack temporarily.

Word from the vets at U. of Missouri is that they think they can help BB!! He is scheduled for surgery first thing Monday morning. The entire orthopedic department, and the head of anesthesia will be scrubbed in, helping with the surgery on our little boy. He has a 50% chance of using the leg again, with some normality. But they are only going to work on the major problems, so fixing the smaller stuff, like the assymetry of his pelvis will have to be another surgery in the future.

Beeb has to stay there…four hours away from his happy pack. With all the 24/7 attention he’ll get, he will probably adjust to it better than we will. Kenai is going to be a total wreck, howling and looking for his little bro. Oh boy. At least he’ll have company in the crying department.

Right now Kenai is taking a nap, after a pleasant wander through his field of play and a chance to lay in the sunshine while I worked on a weedy patch. He’s looking rather regal here, assured that all is currently well in Dane-mark (I know, bad pun).

He has settled back down from the “terrible twos”, and is astonishingly obedient again. Even with little bro, he ignores most of the nipping and bugging, just going on about his business.

Their food is now switched over, Eagle pack abandoned after many tries. On Innova large breed puppy, their stools are normal and solid. The mineral ratio is a bit lower too, and is an excellent food to recommend for Dane pups.

Kenai is in a growth spurt again, after a slight pause. I called and asked his breeder about the sudden slow down last week, since he is growing so differently from my past American bred Danes. She said no worries, it was normal for her pups to barely grow for a week or two, then hit the turbo boosters.

Speaking of boosters, Kenai has his 16 weeks shots Friday. We are a week behind because of the coccidia problems at 12 weeks old. So be it, he gets his shots all the same. And with the change to warm weather, I will be asking about Frontline Plus or Advantix. We are overrun by ticks this year, already. I pick 5-6 off of each of us after every field run. I’ve had acute Lyme disease once, and still deal with the chronic effects. Don’t care to go there again.

Since I’m feeling like a picture princess at the moment, I’ve added another pic here of Kenai ready for his outing. He has a baby pack, but there is nothing in it. It is to get him used to wearing something, and the handle is actually better at slowing is pace when I need to than the leash! He’s such a tolerant little tyke, my baby love.

My wumpus will hopefully have a quiet and nearly normal weekend to spend with his brother before he leaves. My brother was told (again) that he and his daughter have to go out for the day Saturday.

He’s heard this before and just did what the devil he pleased, which was lay around and allow his child to wreck our house unsupervised.

He was lucky I discovered Emily had cornered a terrified Beeber before he bit her last weekend. She didn’t mean any harm, but he didn’t think so.

My brother really has some kind of industrial sized %*($ to bully Mom in her own home. Just like his father: screw you, I’ll do what I want. And not do what he doesn’t want. It’s wrecked two marriages, and is wrecking all his relationships. You’d think he’d see it…

It’s not my house, so I can’t give him road rash from the eviction, but I do admit to resenting the hell out of him for what he does to Mom’s and my emotions. Kind of like the older brother of the Prodigal son, I guess. Bitterness and resentment are not good for me. I do NOT want to be like thant. But it’s hard to deal with.

I wish I were more like dogs: they let stuff go so fast. One google search on my blog stats asked if dogs can forgive…they are the first, fastest, and best at forgiving!!! I hope the person who was looking for that answer found it. They can draw blood, then snuggle up and nap together in 5 minutes. How they can forgive humans for what some of us do to them is an absolute miracle.

Dogs adjust, and get over it, and always look for ways to be stable and loving. These two littermates can start some whizbangers of fights, but as soon as I break it up, it’s over. They lay down again and are back to being good little boys. Shame I can’t do that! Shame we all can’t do that, huh?
