The Queen of the Mothballs…Lisa Harmon

I spies somethin there…Kenai 2 yrs

Kenai’s been having outings in the early morning, 2 or 3 days a week. With the heat, it’s pushing 90 F by 10 am, so he gets taken home when the car’s dash says 85 F. Short rides. Tiny rides. Miniscule and unsatisfying rides to his boy thoughts. But the humidity is record awful, and I won’t risk him overheating.

When I go home today I will transform into the queen of mothballs–I found a copperhead 2 feet from our back sidewalk. Snakes hate the smell, so tossing a few mothballs around will run them off. I hate the smell too, but not as much as I hate poisonous snakes that close. (Don’t tell Peta but I killed it)

And I’ve got a hearing date for SSI August 26th. Talk about an absolutely insensible system. I’ve hesitated “entering the system” but it’s pretty obvious to a blind muskrat that I’m not going to be able to support myself. At my age, it’s downhill from here, ya know? If I can get my conservative, SSA-gunshy doctors to fill out a source statement, my chances are good.

Some of my docs have had the social security administration “crack down” and give everybody hell for supporting SSI claims, rather than go to the effort of recognizing those docs who are committing fraud. It’s a beauracracy, what do ya expect? (Heaven help us, Obama care is coming…)

If I do get an award, I’m hoping it would be enough to fence in the field, even just an acre or so, where his Majesty could be turned loose to run free. His heart longs to have room and scent trails and to chase, but he needs a fence to be safe. BB is rock solid on recall, and retrieval, so there’s no worries with him.

Anyway, not much else is new other than the snakes and beauracrats. If I sound a touch cynical, I apologize. With Kenai sliding back into problems with the tick diseases, and Mom on my back too, I’ve been feeling sorry for myself. [insert bronx cheer at me for that]

I love my lovely sweet pea and it’s a sorrowful thing to see him feeling poorly. I’d give almost anything to cure him once and for all, to have a happy healthy brown bear of a boy again. We had such hope and joy in each other when Kenai was a tiny toddles, yet his life has turned into something mostly not joyful.

Okay, no dwelling. You want to see something gorgeous, get a load of http://www.fotodanes.com/?page_id=233 Kenai would think he died and went to heaven if I could drop him in the middle of that play session! This site is the one that convinced me to try raw diet, even if I chewed my nails down to the bone. These Danes are soooooo healthy. Definitely an excellent breeder.

Okay…this post was started July 23. Same ol’ if you know what I mean. Somethin’s gotta change soon. Three months of this latest “crisis” is long enough. I gotta get some room to breathe and rest. Yada Yada. Been saying that for 2 years, as if anyone’s listening in my house.

Kenai hasn’t had much by way of outings or exercise, either. Triple digit heat isn’t good for us. Whew, August won’t be missed when it’s gone! The tomatoes and cucumbers are though, by Kenai especially. Burned up, kapluey.

Kenai did get to the vet last Friday–we now have the full compliment of secondary infections in addition to the personality changes and leg pains. Tick titers were first up, followed by liver and kidney panels, the works, poor baby. (He hates needles).

He could only take 2 days of oral antibiotics for the bladder infection before the screaming runs started all over, so the vet ordered a deadly expensive injectible for his sorry boy self. He’s still getting his soapy toes for the yeast overgrowth, and BB still has his skin staph. Where do I go to resign?

Kenai’s latest trip to the puppy store was a delight: I’d given him a pain pill (low dose), and as soon as he set eyes on his “girlfriend” (store owner), it was play time! Paw slapping play bows, leaping and loping, peek around the corner games…He even ignored the cat, he was having so much fun.

I’m outta time, unfortunately, so I’ll just go ahead and post in case ya thought I’d fallen off the edge of the earth. Still here! Sorta. Next post will be better, ya’ll, I promise.
