Having become disabled in my 30's, I began a new and unexepected life journey, chronicled on a blog. The need for tenacity, maintaining a stubbornly positive outlook on life, and the determination to focus on what I can do, have been the most important lessons disability has taught me.
I decided that training my own Great Danes to be my assistance dogs was one way I could have a fuller, more independent life. The experience has taught me more about life, love, and respect than any other endeavor of my life. There has been amazing triumphs, and deep sorrows but I wouldn't trade one moment of it!

Saying goodbye
It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are." -- Cheryl ZuccaroFlickr Photos

/ July 9, 2010Hi
We are adopting a fawn great dane 5 month old girl. She will be trained by us to be my service dog when my guy can’t do that job anymore. Walter, my dobe, is 8+ years old and no longer wishes to go every day. This new little girl lol will be joining us on Monday afternoon. Any advice would be appreciated. I know she needs socialization as she is a bit on the shy side right now.
Thanks
Terry

/ February 10, 2012Great blog! My wife and I just purchased a new great dane. he is 9 1/2 weeks old, merle color. We picked him on Wednesday and it is now Friday so he has been here about 3 days. He has a hard time listening, but is very well mannered. We just bought some treats today and I will begin training him on the basic commands, starting with sit and come. We are first time great dane owners and loving every minute. If you have any tips for a first time owner I would love to hear them! Thanks. Oh one thing, my wife and I are in our last semester of school and so on Tuesdays and Thursdays we are at the house in the mornings but gone most of the day till 5 except for an hour during lunch. The first thursday we left him in the bathroom and he didn’t like that. He barked the whole time(we live in a 4 plex and thats what my neighbor said) and he made a mess. So if you have any tips on what to do when we unfortunatly have to leave him for a little while please let me know. Thanks! and babysitter tips when we are gone on school/business stuff.
Thanks!
Nate and Roo(our great dane)
